| James' letter from France Day 1: Home to Rheims |
| I knew something was going on. Mum and dad
seemed to have been sorting out clothes, toys, sheets,
towels, nappies and software for the laptop for days. So
this morning I decided to wake up a bit earlier and find
out what was happening. Strangely enough, in the past if
I've woken up before 6.30am there has been delay, and
finally someone reluctantly comes to get me if I make
enough noise. This morning it wasn't even six o'clock,
and as soon as I even murmered mummy was by the side of
my cot, getting me out for my first feed of the day. I thought it was strange that when we left the house (before my proper breakfast) both mummy and daddy were in the car. Normally if I leave the house before breakfast this means I am being taken to see Sue for the day, a lovely lady who I keep company three days a week when mummy goes to work. After about half an hour I realised we probably weren't going to see Sue, so I thought I might as well go back to sleep. Shortly after I woke again, we stopped for breakfast. It was great - there were lots of other people having their breakfast, and I spoke to lots of them. |
|
A bit later, we stopped for a change of nappy, and dad seemed rather keen to get a couple of bottles (although he could have had one of mine). And then we drove onto a long train. The train started moving, and soon it was dark outside again. I knew it couldn't be night already, and mummy explained that it was a tunnel under the sea. |
| As we came out of the tunnel, I was
astonished to find that daddy, normally a careful driver,
was driving on the wrong side of the road! But it seemed
everyone else was doing the same thing, so I suppose it
was the best thing to do. I had another sleep, and then we stopped for lunch. I sat underneath an umbrella to eat my sandwiches, but decided mummy and daddy's pizza looked more interesting, so I had a go at that too. |

Back on the road, mummy driving this
time, we carried on after lunch. Then finally, we arrived
in Rheims. After a quick drink in the room at the hotel,
I was into my preferred form of transport (forget
'stroller', mine is turbo powered!), and we spent the
rest of the afternoon looking at old bits of wall, and
other things. My favourite place was a large building called 'Notre-Dame Cathedrale'. There were some other boys, a bit older than me, who were singing when we arrived, and we listened to them for some time. Lots of people spoke to me, although I didn't really understand what they were saying. Something about 'jollie bebe'? |
| After some more bits of old wall, we went back to the hotel where I was given my tea. Now, normally after tea, we play a bit, then I have a last feed with mummy, and then daddy reads me a story and puts me to bed. But tonight I was dressed again (I was showing off my legs this afternoon in my shorts) and we went out for another walk. This time, we stopped under some umbrellas, and a funny man who kept shaking hands with me brought me some bread, which mum and dad ate some of as well. Then I let them have their tea (they called it dinner), and chatted with lots of other people eating. The funny man who shook my hand tried to drink my juice, so I tried to drink the beer instead. |
