This
was the first of our three holidays on French campsites where
we just couldn't find anywhere on the site we would rather
have been (move your mouse over the picture to see where our
caravan was). Anywhere closer to the shop would not have been
next to the river; anywhere closer to the entrance would not
have had a fence between us and the river (James had a worried
moment when he thought Matthew had thrown his lemur into the
river, but the fence saved the lemur as well as Matthew).
As
well as providing a beautiful view, and a freshness to the
air, the river also offered plenty of wildlife. The boys enjoyed
feeding the ducks each day with the previous day's stale bread,
and counting the ducklings. One busy mother duck appeared
to have as many as 9 ducklings. At night, we spotted fireflies
and looked out for bats. There was even a hedgehog visiting
us one evening.
We
ate at the campsite restaurant twice during the week, with
two very different experiences. The first time we had an unfriendly,
slow waiter who didn't seem to have heard that the French
were supposed to like children. The second waiter was a complete
contrast - helpful, friendly, efficient. If we'd had him the
first night we may have eaten out more often. The food itself
was delicious, although the portions were just a bit small.
Outside the restaurant was a stage area, with entertainment
some nights. When there was no entertainment provided, the
boys made their own, as you can see James and Matthew ran
their own karaoke!
Two
years ago James was still very much attached to our side when
we were out. Now, both boys quickly make friends. They already
seem very good with the girls - James and Kerry arranged liaisons
at the swimming pool, and Matthew quickly found a dancing
partner for the Celtic music evening.
