For
our "sun" holiday this year we stayed in a mobile
home at Camping du Pylone, at Biot near Antibes. We flew down
to Nice from Luton by Easyjet, and spent a whole week without
a car. But transport was not a problem - we were very near
the railway station and the local buses were good. Plus we
were right in the middle of a major entertainment complex,
so there was lots to do right on the doorstep.
As
you can see, James and Matthew brought only the bare essentials
with them on holiday - Thomas the Tank Engine, Oliver, Toad
the brake van, a troublesome truck and a zoo full of animals.
In the mobile home they found new toys to play with. For James,
his favourite was a large train. This was actually the back
of the sofa, but when laid on the floor it made a suitable
vehicle for carrying all the other toys. 'I used my imagination'
cited James when challenged on his wreckless use of furniture.
Matthew's
favourite toy in the caravan was the guard in front of the
gas fire. This levered forwards in a most pleasing fashion,
creating satisfying noises...
Fortunately,
we spent little time inside the caravan as the weather was
so great - warmer than 2000 when the cold drove us inside
for evening meals, and cooler than 1999 when it was often
too hot for an al fresco lunch.
The
Net: This was an unusual holiday in a couple of respects;
firstly the lack of a car, and secondly it was just about
all booked on the internet. Now you're probably saying "but
lots of people book holidays on the internet these days".
But this was no package holiday. We'd found a camp site we
liked the look of, but didn't like the prices that the tour
operator was charging, nor the minimal reduction for not taking
a car (we still had to pay for flights). So a web search turned
up Tony Rothwell's web site all about the site and about the
area. Tony rents his caravan out, but was going to there himself
the week we wanted so gave us Bev and Bob's email address.
We booked with them by email, and they also arranged with
Lorraine Hart on site (who also manages rentals - see her
web
site) for linen hire and airport transfer. Plane tickets
booked with Easyjet, and parking at Luton airport, all via
the net. And it all worked beautifully well!
