Scans of James
| Scans are a very reassuring way of seeing the baby at an early stage and checking that it has all the right parts in the right places. It's a fascinating experience seeing the baby and realising just how much it moves even when it is only half way through the forty week gestation period. For the (soon-to-be) dad it's probably the first time he can really feel involved in the pregnancy, as many of the other medical check-ups at this time involve only the mother. | ||||

This scan of James was taken at
Amersham hospital. It was taken in late March 1998 when he was about 21 weeks 'old', that is, about half
way through the normal 40 weeks of a pregnancy term. The
radiographer who carried out the scan reckoned that the
baby was further through the pregnancy than we originally
thought and gave us a predicted due date of 28th July,
however we are held to 'our' date of 6th August. James was of
course born on 7th August - so much for medical science.
NB: we still didn't know at this stage he was a 'James'! |

Somewhat earlier in the pregnancy, when James was
still only about 13 weeks old, and there was very little
'bump' to show, we had a bit of a scare when Bridget was
on a business trip in Aberdeen. Fortunately everything
settled down again and a scan confirmed that the baby
appeared fine.
Now to be honest it does take some imagination to see the baby well - his head is downwards and to the right, and the placenta can be seen towards to top left, slightly away from the uterus wall. |

This scan of James was also taken at Aberdeen hospital in late January 1998. This second picture shows his head at the bottom, and his back lying vertically to the left of the head. | |||
