James comes home

His first week at home

Bridget and James left Wycombe General Hospital and came home on Sunday 9th August when James was just two days old. He was checked over by the paediatrician and found to be healthy on all counts. This picture shows Bridget giving James a hug in the hospital room before getting him and herself ready to leave.

And a hug from Malcolm as well to prepare James for his first car journey. Since it is now compulsory for children carried in cars always to be sitting in purpose designed car seats, we had bought one well in advance. We had also tried fitting it into the car before hand using Bridget's doll as the "passenger". We had heard to people fiddling for ages to get the seat fitted for the first time, and didn't want James to suffer unnecessarily.

Home at last, and a chance for James to get some (gentle) sun. Babies are frequently jaundiced soon after birth as the liver takes a little time to get going, and it is recommended for them to get a reasonable amount of UV light to help break down the unwanted chemicals during this period. Indirect sunlight is best, but a small amount if direct for the sake of a photo is also fine!

Home now, and into some sort of routine of, well, feeding and sleeping really, punctuated by crying and changing. These two pictures show James at his best - asleep! He started feeding quite well once he'd got the hang of it, but suffered from wind and colic after a few days. We discovered the wonderful medicine Infacol, an inert chemical that makes the air bubbles join together and hence easier to wind. Tip to new parents - get some just in case!
By the time he was a week old, James started to have times awake when he wasn't crying or feeding, and he started looking around to take in his environment. He becomes more interesting by the day, and it's just fascinating to see the changes in him in only one week.
